There was confusion at the M A Chidambaram stadium in Chepauk, Tamil Nadu, on Monday when a police officer stopped a few cricket fans from bringing Indian flags into the stadium to watch the match between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Some fans tried to take Indian flags into the stadium to watch the match where Pakistan was batting. A police sub-inspector prevented them from doing so, causing rumors that the police were restricting the use of the national tricolor.
However, a senior police official, when contacted, stated that there was no such restriction on carrying the Indian flag.
"It is allowed. An officer acted on his own, and a departmental inquiry is underway," he informed PTI.
He clarified that this incident was isolated, and the police did not prevent anyone from carrying the Indian flag.
The police official mentioned that flags representing India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan were all allowed inside the stadium.
Meanwhile, the BJP state chief, K Annamalai, criticized the police for allegedly denying permission to carry the Indian flag.
"The police outside the stadium prohibited fans from bringing the Indian flag to today's match in Chepauk. Who gave TNCA this authority?" Annamalai questioned.
In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, "We demand the strictest action against the police officers for disrespecting our National flag, and the DMK should apologize to the people of our state. If not, @BJP4TamilNadu will be forced to protest against this Corrupt DMK government for undermining the sanctity of the Tricolor."
